Search the United States Census Records
The United States Census Records holds a goldmine of information. For a start, they can confirm the name of your ancestor, who they lived with, where they lived, their occupation, whether they could read and write, and their neighbors.The majority of Black people weren't recorded on the census until 1870 after the Civil War. However, Free People of Color were listed earlier than that.
